Biographical Sketch

I’m an associate professor of English (technical communication and rhetoric) at Old Dominion University. My research foci include environmental risk communication, visual communication methods, and user testing. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in technical writing and technical writing pedagogy.

Other Research

Current projects:

  • Technical consultant and designer on Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Grant with Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. Work includes designing a flood rate and risk calculator for residents of Hampton Roads.
  • User testing of calculator listed above; grant through the CCRFR (Commonwealth Center for Recurrent Flooding Resilience) at Old Dominion University.
  • Recently published work evaluating the usability of Climate Central’s Risk Zone Map
  • Currently developing story map using Esri’s applications that includes video recordings of vulnerable residents in Hampton Roads and along Florida’s Space Coast. Project funded by ACM SIGDOC.
